Description:

The Electric Blue Cichlid, also known as the Electric Blue Hap, is a popular fish among aquarium enthusiasts due to its striking blue coloration. Native to Lake Malawi in Africa, this carnivorous species primarily feeds on smaller fish in the wild. Its semi-aggressive nature and territorial behavior, especially during breeding, make it a standout in many aquariums. The vibrant blue hue and dynamic behavior make it a favorite choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.

Aquarium Size and Conditions:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons.
  • Water Conditions: pH 7.8-8.6, Temperature 78-82°F (25-28°C).
  • Tank Setup: Spacious with plenty of hiding spots.

Feeding Recommendations:
Being carnivorous, the Electric Blue Cichlid thrives on a diet of smaller fish in the wild. In captivity, they should be provided with high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with occasional servings of live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp or bloodworms.

Additional Notes:

  • Tank Mates: Best kept with other African cichlids of similar size and temperament. Suitable tank mates include other Malawi cichlids, Yellow Labs, and Peacock Cichlids. Monitor for excessive aggression.
  • Breeding: They are mouthbrooders. The female carries the fertilized eggs in her mouth until they hatch. Providing flat rocks or caves can encourage spawning.
  • Care Level: While relatively easy to care for, maintaining the right water conditions and a balanced diet is crucial. Regular water changes and tank maintenance are essential.
